{"id":3858,"date":"2024-01-16T13:59:22","date_gmt":"2024-01-16T18:59:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/students.bowdoin.edu\/bsg\/?p=3858"},"modified":"2024-01-16T13:59:22","modified_gmt":"2024-01-16T18:59:22","slug":"11-8-bsg-assembly-notes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/students.bowdoin.edu\/bsg\/meeting-minutes-fall-2023\/11-8-bsg-assembly-notes\/","title":{"rendered":"11\/8 BSG Assembly Notes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Attendance:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Paul Wang<\/p>\n<p>Anyi Sun<\/p>\n<p>Brandon Lozano Garay<\/p>\n<p>Danielle Lancaster<\/p>\n<p>Sachin Maharaj<\/p>\n<p>Chase Lenk<\/p>\n<p>Ni\u00f1a Ramores<\/p>\n<p>Eisa Rafat<\/p>\n<p>John Donoghue<\/p>\n<p>Mundo Ortiz Alvarez<\/p>\n<p>Harper Stevenson<\/p>\n<p>Alejandro Ramos<\/p>\n<p>Camila Eljuri<\/p>\n<p>Nyla Danzy<\/p>\n<p>Temi Agunloye<\/p>\n<p>Chelsea Moody<\/p>\n<p>Elliott Ewell<\/p>\n<p>Eman Okyere<\/p>\n<p>Cash Reynolds<\/p>\n<p>Timmy Ignacio<\/p>\n<p>Eva Sola-Sole<\/p>\n<p>Zahren York<\/p>\n<p>Ollie Tannahil<\/p>\n<p>Liliana Restrepo<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Call to Order<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Reflection from last meeting<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Camila: It was a good meeting; Benje had a lot of reflections on community<\/li>\n<li>Paul: Had a conversation with Benje on how it is important to consider what identities BSG doesn\u2019t represent as a student organization; Benje will help us to have introspective conversations next semester<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Committee Updates (by choice)<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Student Affairs\n<ul>\n<li>Harper: Going to meet with Sandra Hayes tomorrow to talk about BSG\u2019s role in supporting Counseling and the Health Center and how students perceive their initiatives<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Facilities &amp; Sustainability\n<ul>\n<li>Elliot: Dining survey has received over 200 responses; two ideas that have emerged are 1) lactose intolerance is an eating group that needs help and 2) specifying items that contain tree nuts in the dining hall<\/li>\n<li>Brandon: Almost done packing laundry bins; SAD light therapy will be up and running next week; talking with Jeff Tuttle about hands-free door handles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Diversity &amp; Inclusion\n<ul>\n<li>Sachin: As a follow-up from last week, the D&amp;I committee will sponsor and event with Benje\u2019s office around the first week of December to inform affinity leaders about the Student Belonging Survey<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Proposals to Vote<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>2324\u20138: BSG Design Continuity\n<ul>\n<li><b>Motion passes<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Voting to support food trucks for Maine Community Foundation for Lewiston-Auburn Area Response Fund (Home Opener)\n<ul>\n<li>Men\u2019s hockey team wants BSG\u2019s help in promoting the event, doing information tabling, and lending money to rent two food trucks for the event<\/li>\n<li>It would be $6,000 for two food trucks \u2013 Pinky D\u2019s &amp; Tacos de Seoul \u2013 with 350 meals being purchased from each truck<\/li>\n<li>This is pending approval from Nate Hintze and Tim Ryan \u2013 wouldn\u2019t give money unless approvals were granted<\/li>\n<li>Ollie: Could we host a Lewiston-based food truck?\n<ul>\n<li>Nate: Pinky D\u2019s is based in Lisbon; it has a partner taco truck based in Lewiston that we could reach out to<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Motion passes<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a02324\u20139: Creation of a BSG Award to honor uncommon contributions to BSG\u2019s work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>More so to recognize uncommon contributions to BSG<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Would be $50 or less to two members of assembly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>A form would go out to the assembly to vote, with Paul and Anyi ultimately choosing two recipients<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>It&#8217;s more so a symbolic gesture than money delivery<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Similar to a preexisting award the Orient has<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Originally thought of this proposal in the context of Bowdoin Course Reviews, but BSG has since hired them to staff<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Motion passes with objection<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Mundo\u2019s book event funding<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>$800 for 20 copies of <i>Yara<\/i> and 20 copies of <i>Minor Detail<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Motion passes with objection<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Executive team report regarding Thanksgiving Break Advocacy<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Brandon:\n<ul>\n<li>The decision to implement a week-long Thanksgiving break is ultimately on President Zaki<\/li>\n<li>Faculty has a sub-committee called GFA, which presented 5 options of modifying the academic calendar<\/li>\n<li>At the last faculty meeting, some faculty members questioned if we\u2019ve been truly representative of students in this effort. They are calling for a broader survey, as there are concerns that past surveys were not representative enough. To summarize, they are generally feeling uninformed<\/li>\n<li>There are some concerns over the environmental impact, as well as a support system for first-generation, low income, and international students<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Paul: There was a quick turnaround before last Friday\u2019s meeting and no time to survey students<\/li>\n<li>Considering BSG is an advocacy group, there is a general consensus that we should pushback and assert that these faculty requests are unreasonable<\/li>\n<li>Eisa: Should we reach out to President Zaki before? Doesn\u2019t seem like some of these reasons can be solved with survey<\/li>\n<li>Anyi: Seemed like the student experience was the biggest concern; having a survey as well as some other event to show how strongly students feel might be good<\/li>\n<li>Eisa: Things like Howell Thanksgiving could be used to demonstrate that there is a tradition of supporting students on campus over break<\/li>\n<li>Cash: We could look into the role of ResLife in these initiatives<\/li>\n<li>Harper: Wellness\/Kate Nicholson could get involved<\/li>\n<li>Paul: There is a quick timeline, as faculty will vote on December 1<\/li>\n<li>Camila: International students only get one round-trip ticket all 4 years; more work could be done to support students instead of restricting length of break<\/li>\n<li>Eman: Will be taking initiative with advocacy to reach out to student groups on campus<\/li>\n<li>This is a good opportunity for BSG to regain its image on campus by taking an external initiative<\/li>\n<li>Paul: Could invite the head of GFA and Dean Scanlon to next week\u2019s meeting; Pres.
