2/12/2025 General Assembly Notes

PUBLIC COMMENT:

  • Feeling disappointed in BSG because heard that BSG voted to not make a statement regarding the encampment. Why were you not making a statement or seeking to hear the perspective of the students?
  • An important role of BSG to combat misinformation or mischaracterization of the situation by administration
  • As one of the few organizations with the authority to send out school-wide emails, BSG has a responsibility to not only release a statement with the correct facts but to consult the people who were in Smith
  • Students have reported being guilted/pressured into leaving. Other violations such as security opening tents.
  • The encampment was set up so Smith could function but people are still under the impression that a barricade was set up and preventing access to Smith, although that was not the students’ doing
  • Disappointed in lack of communication from D&I Committee and BSG at large regarding a commitment to protecting students whose identities are being attacked by the current administration’s executive orders
  • Bowdoin admin has failed at the rule of “do not obey in advance.” Has been 9 months and the referendum has still not been honored

Nyla: Was there at the beginning of the encampment. Thought a delayed, more thought out response was better than a rushed, unfactual response. No vote was had regarding issuing a statement. Intending to reach out to D&I Trustee regarding the recent encampment.

Eisa: Respect your feedback. Very fresh so appreciate that you’re here. Hope you’re getting rest as you spent multiple days in the encampment. Discourse is something important we talk about having here on campus.
