What is ‘Uncommon Hour’?

Uncommon Hour is a lunch-time lecture series featuring Bowdoin’s greatest intellectual minds. Students get to nominate the professors they’d like to hear from, and each of these professors will get 18 minutes to talk about any topic they choose.

Why do professors only get 18 minutes?

Uncommon Hour is inspired by TEDTalks, which pioneered these short presentations that limit each speaker to 18 minutes: long enough to get the point across yet short enough to hold people’s attention, leaving people wanting to learn more.

Which professors presented last year?

Last year, we hosted four successful and well-attended Uncommon Hour events, featuring Professors Dallas Denery (Is It Ever Okay To Lie?), Aviva Briefel (How Horror Rewrites Terror), Paul Franco (Nietzsche’s Word: ‘God is Dead’), and Chuck Dorn (Should Schools Teach Patriotism?). When and where will this program take place?

Each event will begin at 12:30pm on the Fridays without a Common Hour program. Three (3) events are tentatively scheduled for this semester, and each program will feature one professor. Dates and location will be announced soon.

Will there be food?

Of course! We will provide a large assortment of desserts and drinks by Bowdoin Dining.

How do I nominate professors?

BSG will be taking nominations from Monday, 25 February to Saturday, 2 March. Stations will be set up all week in Smith Union, Moulton Union, and Thorne Hall, and voting will also take place online at bsg.bowdoin.edu. You may nominate up to three professors.
