Student Belonging Survey – Marcus Gadsden ‘24
- The Student Belonging Survey is trying to gauge how race, gender, the student/athlete divide, and social scenes (among other things_ attribute to a sense of belonging on campus
- The Office of Inclusion and Diversity plans to release the survey mid-February
- Res Life, BSG, and AOCC will have access to survey results;
- They are trying to provide as much info as possible to students – want transparency
- Many of the questions will be student-generated
- There will be an info session about the survey held in December
- The survey will be sent out every 3 years
Senior Vice President for Inclusion and Diversity – Benje Douglas

- Benje enjoys working with students because of the campus connections that can be made
- You can be in touch with Benje about the survey
- Aim for higher than 86% success rate
- Working closely with students helped
- He works to create opportunities for students and staff to have best experience possibility
- Barriers to success can be complicated or obvious, and his job is to acknowledge and hopefully remove them for students
- He takes acts of discrimination seriously and thoroughly investigate them
- Hopes to create a sense of belonging
- To Benje, belonging means that a person has a few places on campus where others are happy to see them and care about what they have to say
- Fun is important for affinity groups, and it is key to having hard conversations
- Initiatives the Office of I&D is working on:
- Student Belonging Survey
- Employee support – employee resource group, parenting, queer employees, employees of color
- Processes of campus that can be addressed through lens of inclusion
