Call to Order

Committee announcements / other thoughts

  • Alex: SOOC is starting to work on a giant club wall
  • Paul: No meeting next week. Guests at future meetings include Matt Orlando, Keisha Payson, 10 former BSG presidents, President Zaki

Peter Bae (Director of the College Library)

  • Introduction, overview of the library, thoughts on the past year in new role
    • Came to the U.S. from South Korea in 2000. Has been the library director since August 2023.
    • In his previous positions, he didn’t like losing interaction with students. At Bowdoin, it’s a small community where he can talk directly with students.
    • To Peter, the library is about information and making connections. In his position, he is focusing on services and where he can connect people.
  • Discussion with the assembly (Q&A)
    • Abigail: Thoughts on renovations?
      • Peter: Discussion of a new library building has been a focal point
      • Camila: Locked room on 1st floor of HL?
        • Peter: Meeting room
      • Mundo: How can BSG help?
        • Peter: We are here for you; let us help you
      • Elliott: Possible making textbooks available through the library, especially for intro classes?
        • Peter: Professors must submit reading lists, and the library tries to have at least one copy of each textbook. Unfortunately some textbooks are expensive, and new editions are constantly published.
      • Eisa: So many cool programs/things to offer in library; would be great to amplify them
      • Camila: Need to give more visibility to library resources
      • Peter: How to reach out to students? Social media?
        • Eisa: Night programming, food
        • Ollie: Required library orientation as part of FYWS
        • Harper: Rotating slides on the TV in the HL entryway
        • Melissa: Maybe could find a way to see if books are available at library on textbook site
          • Elliott: Or Classfinder?
      • Eisa: Could have a BSG–library informational campaign using posters and social media
      • Paul: New security updates – implications for community members?
        • Peter: Library open 8-5 & must scan after 5pm. However, the library should be for everyone, so community members can let them know to get access, including for events after 5

Proposals

  • Proposal 2024–2: Russwurm African American Center (Nyla, Agenda)
    • Seeking to correctly identify John Russwurm and rename the Russwurm African American Center to the John Brown Russwurm Pan-African Center. Russwurm was not African American and only came to the U.S. to pursue higher education
      • Wanted to make BSG aware and gain their support; started a petition and will be meeting with Benji
        • Eisa: Recommends reaching out to alumni
        • Elliott: Black Alumni Association will be meeting 2/24
  • Proposal – Sunday Spotlight (Brandon):
    • Publication that would be published once a month; inspired by humans of NY; would feature students, faculty, and staff
      • Abigail: Trying to build more of a social media presence, possibly IG reels
      • Kaya: Could draw from Williams’ 1 in 2000
        • Paul: Potential collaboration with the Orient
      • Paul: emphasizing how amazing staff are on campus
  • Proposal 2024–1: New SAFC Guidelines Approval (Danielle, Vote)
  1. Motion to vote: motion passes by 2/3 vote
