Gather these items for the Erev Rosh Hashanah Seder, September 18, 5:30pm

  • Candles for Shabbat and Holiday candle lighting
  • A food item that you haven’t eaten yet this year, your choice!
  • Dates
  • Pomegranate
  • Pumpkin/Gourd/Winter squash
  • Leeks or scallions
  • Fish head (see notes below)
  • A food item that is round, your choice!
  • Apples and honey
  • Grape juice or wine
  • Challah  (traditionally a round shaped challah)

Here are a few ideas to help with your preparation:

  1. We will eat the items listed above (for the most part). Serve them plain/raw or consider making a recipe. For example- pumpkin soup, blue cheese stuffed dates, scallion pancakes- yum! Let your imagination and appetite soar!
  2. If you can’t find an item from the list, don’t worry. Feel free to come up with creative alternatives. For example, instead of an actual Fish Head use gummy fish, a lettuce head, or goldfish crackers.

L’Shana Tova u-Metukah!
Wishing you and your families a happy and sweet new year

Sherry Bergman

We couldn’t end the year without expressing our gratitude and appreciation of Sherrie Bergman, who this year is retiring.  An advisor to Hillel for over 12 years now, Sherrie has had a wonderful influence  on Hillel and has been incredibly important to Hillel’s development, maintenance, and growth.  Without a doubt, Hillel would not be where it is today without her expertise, perspective, an advice on many matters.  For this, Bowdoin Hillel is greatly indebted to Sherrie Bergman, and we would like to convey our deepest thanks for her many years of commitment and service to the Jewish community here at Bowdoin.

To learn more about Sherrie Bergman, we invite you to read the following article in the Bowdoin Daily Sun:  http://www.bowdoindailysun.com/bowdoin-college-librarian-sherrie-bergman-to-receive-2012-alumni-award-for-faculty-and-staff/
